Churches of Bratislava, Slovakia This past spring I had the pleasure of going on a central European vacation with my wife, and amongst my fondest memories was the time we spent stopping in Bratislava on a trip bookended by several days Budapest and Vienna.  Bratislava is not to be overlooked. This small European capital city of Slovakia is unique not just for the stark juxtaposition of Medieval architecture and ultra-soviet era modernism that slashed through the city without regard, but for the warmth of its people. Be it taking a tour of the modern apartments and civic buildings in a Soviet era Skoda (car), or meandering through the old town and hiking to the castle, you can't help but fall for the allure.  But I digress, this blog is about Church Crawling and so I should share that major aspect of the trip. Saint Athanasius Parish, Reading, Massachusetts I intend to explore and experience the services of many different churches, predominantly near where I live in Massachusetts. Discovering all of these different faith communities builds my knowledge of the neighborhoods around me and the people who live there. These institutions are important, often overlooked and even misjudged centers of our communities that seek to make a positive impact on their participants, as well as others through their generosity and public service. It is possible that through this activity I may eventually consider a long term relationship with one of these pillars and foundations of the community, however I am eager to do a lot of exploring first. National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, Attleboro, Massachusetts Pillars & Foundations documents an exploration of communities, as well as faith through religious institutions. My intent is to share experiences, and spread the positivity that I observe.  Reflecting on my 2018 Journey Prior to discussing Our Lady of La Salette further, please humor me as I reflect. This blog has documented a year long journey that has taken me to over 50 different churches, shrines, temples and faith centers. Most of these I was privileged to attend a service and to mingle with community members. It has be a terrific experience exploring faith, religion, community, charity, and I am better off as a consequence. St. Florence Parish, Wakefield, MA Pillars & Foundations was initiated as an exploration of communities, as well as faith through religious institutions. My intent is to share experiences, and spread the positivity that I observe. Faith centers embody a drive to make a difference which they deliver upon, regardless if it is with one person looking for hope & community, or a recipient of their expansive charitable work. Building & History St. Florence 's neighborhood is not where one would expect to find a Catholic church. It is situated on a seldom travelled side street, with a posted "weight limit" in a sleepy area of family homes with well manicured lawns and grand leafy trees. The church has an air of tranquility to it, perhaps due to its light brick A-frame like structure creating a vaulted nave with a rough finish ceiling. Old South Church, Boston, Massachusetts

Old South Church, Boston, Massachusetts: New Year's 2019 Organ Concert Pillars & Foundations documents an exploration of communities, as well as faith through religious institutions. My intent is to share experiences, and spread the positivity that I observe.  Building & History At the time of my visit, and writing of this post, the Old South Church Congregation is celebrating it's 350th anniversary! Many noteworthy historical figures have been congregants at Old South, including Benjamin Franklin who was baptized there, and Samuel Adams who once held Tea Party meetings in the earliest meeting house. Old South's website notes that the newest structure which is pictured was built in 1875 during the Gilded Age, and it is evident. It describes the architecture as Northern Italian Ruskinian Gothic. I definitely can see similarities in the eaves to some churches I've visited in Italy. If my photos (often blurry on the exterior- I don't get to Back Bay ...
