Churches of Bratislava

Churches of Bratislava, Slovakia This past spring I had the pleasure of going on a central European vacation with my wife, and amongst my fondest memories was the time we spent stopping in Bratislava on a trip bookended by several days Budapest and Vienna.  Bratislava is not to be overlooked. This small European capital city of Slovakia is unique not just for the stark juxtaposition of Medieval architecture and ultra-soviet era modernism that slashed through the city without regard, but for the warmth of its people. Be it taking a tour of the modern apartments and civic buildings in a Soviet era Skoda (car), or meandering through the old town and hiking to the castle, you can't help but fall for the allure.  But I digress, this blog is about Church Crawling and so I should share that major aspect of the trip. St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish, Melrose, MA Pillars & Foundations was initiated as an exploration of communities as well as faith through religious institutions. My intent is to share my experiences, and spread the positivity I obtain from them. Faith centers embody a drive to make a difference which they deliver upon, regardless if it is with one person looking for hope & community, or a recipient of their expansive charitable work. The Building & the History of the Parish I used to live close by on Pleasant St. in Melrose, and I was always impressed by this building. As seemed to be a smaller wooden, community church, that was designed in the fashion of a grand stone church. In recent times the parish chose to replace the wooden shingles with vinyl siding, however as you can see from the pictures, it was done carefully and tastefully, and the ornate features of the awnings, accents around the rose window and other windows are preserved. Saint Joseph Parish, Wakefield, Massachusetts

Saint Joseph Parish, Wakefield, MA The purpose of this blog is to explore different churches and to learn about my community in the process. In this activity I am re-exposing myself to religion after an absence, and also learning about the diversity within faiths, between denominations, and potentially eventually between religions as well.  Saint Joseph Parish demonstrates that you should never judge a book by its cover. Having been raised Catholic, I generally feel I know what to expect, and I can say Saint Joseph Parish surprised me in several ways, largely by putting contemporary spin on tradition. The Building & History: The current church, despite supporting a parish that is 164 years old , is very modern. MIT Chapel, Cambridge, Massachusetts Pillars & Foundations documents an exploration of communities, as well as faith through religious institutions. My intent is to share experiences, and spread the positivity that I observe.  Building & History Wikipedia has a good write-up on this unique building, noting not just the unusual windowless-cylindrical sanctuary, but the landscaping. In warmer months the round sanctuary is surrounded on the outside by a reflecting pool or "moat," as it seems to be described. The trees are a crucial part of the appearance of the building, London Planetrees, they create a natural buffer to the bustle around, while the irregular lighter bark stands in contrast to the dark tones of the brick. A stained glass entryway is perhaps the one part of the structure letting light in, and for someone perhaps only casually familiar with the mid-century modern era, this section of the structure seems to especially evoke that style.
