Saint Joseph Parish, Wakefield, MA The purpose of this blog is to explore different churches and to learn about my community in the process. In this activity I am re-exposing myself to religion after an absence, and also learning about the diversity within faiths, between denominations, and potentially eventually between religions as well.  Saint Joseph Parish demonstrates that you should never judge a book by its cover. Having been raised Catholic, I generally feel I know what to expect, and I can say Saint Joseph Parish surprised me in several ways, largely by putting contemporary spin on tradition. The Building & History: The current church, despite supporting a parish that is 164 years old , is very modern. Union Chapel, Interdenominational House of Worship by the Sea, North Hampton, NH

It's been a while, a year actually since I've posted in Pillars & Foundations. The thought has been there however like many I've tried to navigate this altered state that we exist in. Like many of you I've sought out different methods of managing my peace of mind. For me it has been escaping to nature when I can for look solitary walks in the forest. While not a solid excuse, my blogging has certainly taken a hit by re-dedication of time. Of course my exploration of community institutions, and places of worship has also taken a hit by curbs on social gatherings. I suspect these days I would get more strange looks showing up somewhere I don't regularly attend, with the justified concerns of people, and often reduced attendance of services. At the end of this summer I happened upon Union Chapel in North Hampton, NH when my wife and I were visiting the gorgeous Fuller Gardens . Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Lewiston, Maine In Pillars & Foundations, I intend explore and experience the services of many different churches, predominantly near where I live in Massachusetts. These institutions are important, often overlooked and even misjudged centers of our communities that seek to make a positive impact on their participants as well as others through their generosity and public service. In this particular entry I'm writing about an experience in what arguably is the architectural centerpiece of Lewiston and Auburn Maine. When I return to Maine from Massachusetts, seeing the impressive Basilica in the distance from the turnpike lets me know I've almost made it to my home town of Sabattus. Madonna Queen of the Universe National Shrine, East Boston, Massachusetts Pillars & Foundations was initiated as an exploration communities as well as faith through religious institutions. My intent is to share experiences, and spread the positivity that I observe. Faith centers embody a drive to make a difference which they deliver upon, regardless if it is with one person looking for hope & community, or a recipient of their expansive charitable work. This post took to the fringes of what I'd consider my neighborhood, and shows how much there can be to see right in our own back yards that we take for granted. For many years the sign on the side of Rt. 1A intrigued me but I never took the time to explore it. Saint Agnes Parish, Reading, MA

Saint Agnes Parish, Reading, MA Pillars & Foundations is a project I started over the 2016-2017 holiday season to explore my surrounding communities through its diverse churches and centers of faith. I think we can all benefit knowing of the positive impact that these organizations have. I have been visiting area places of worship in Wakefield where I reside, as well as an assortment of other communities such as Malden, Melrose, Stoneham and Lynnfield. This is my first visit to one of neighboring Reading's beautiful cornerstones, and Palm Sunday was an excellent day to experience Saint Agnes. Building & History Beyond the interesting history of the Parish itself, I found myself wondering, who is Saint Agnes? The story of Saint Agnes is sad and troubling, and this short video at Catholic.org quickly summarizes.
